Forex Lot Size Calculator

Find the position size in lots and units that keeps the loss at your stop-loss within a chosen percentage of your account.

Quick answer

Forex position size is set by the risk you accept: lots = (balance x risk %) / (stop loss in pips x pip value per lot). Pip value per standard lot is pip size x 100,000 x the rate into account currency.

Assumptions & method

  • Amount at risk = balance × risk % ÷ 100.
  • Pip value per standard lot = entered directly, or pip size × 100,000 × exchange rate to the account currency.
  • Lots = amount at risk ÷ (stop-loss pips × pip value per standard lot). Units = lots × 100,000.
  • The rounded size is the lot figure rounded down to 0.01 lot; risk at that size = rounded lots × stop pips × pip value per lot.
  • Not included: spread, slippage, gaps, commission, swaps and margin requirements.
  • Educational only; this is not trading or investment advice.

Results are estimates based on the figures you enter. They are not guarantees and not financial advice.

How risk-based position sizing works

Risk-based sizing starts from the loss you can accept, not from the trade you want to take. Multiply your account balance by the risk percentage to get the amount at risk. Your stop-loss distance in pips, multiplied by the value of one pip for one standard lot, gives the loss per lot. Dividing the amount at risk by the loss per lot gives the position size in lots. A wider stop means a smaller position for the same risk. The calculator also shows the size rounded down to a 0.01 lot step and the amount at risk at that size.
