Investment Fee Impact Calculator

See how annual fees reduce your final balance, including the growth you lose on every amount paid out.

Quick answer

Fee impact is the gap between an account growing with no fees and one charged a percentage fee and a flat yearly fee. The difference is fees paid plus the lost growth those fees would have earned.

Assumptions & method

  • Each month: balance × (1 + gross return)^(1/12), then percentage fees of (fund + advisor) ÷ 12 of the balance, then the fixed fee ÷ 12, then the contribution is added at month end.
  • Fees paid = the sum of all fee deductions. Lost growth = (final value without fees − final value with fees) − fees paid.
  • Total cost of fees = final value without fees − final value with fees.
  • The same gross return and contributions are used in both scenarios, so the gap is caused by fees alone.
  • Taxes, inflation, trading costs, sales charges and changes in fee rates are not included. The gross return is an assumption, not a forecast.

How investment fees erode returns

Investment fees are usually quoted as a yearly percentage of what you hold. That means you pay them every year, on a balance that is growing, and each payment also removes the future growth that money would have earned. Over decades the difference between an account with fees and the same account without them can be large, even when the percentage looks small. This calculator runs both versions side by side using the same contributions and gross return. It reports the total fees paid, the growth lost on them and the final balance with and without fees, so you can judge what a fee is really costing.
