Roommate Rent Split Calculator

Split the rent by room size, equally or by income, with a bonus for a private bathroom.

Quick answer

A roommate rent split shares rent by room size, income or equally. A common-area percentage is split evenly, and the rest is split in proportion to each room's weight, with a bathroom bonus percentage added to the weight of rooms with a private bath.

Assumptions & method

  • Common pool = rent × common-area %, split equally between all rooms. The remaining rent is the private pool.
  • Size method: weight = size × (1 + bonus %) for rooms with a private bath, otherwise size. Equal method: every weight is 1. Income method: weight = income.
  • Share = common pool ÷ rooms + private pool × weight ÷ total weight. Shares sum to the total rent.
  • "Per size unit" = share ÷ room size. "% of income" appears only when an income is entered.
  • Utilities, deposits, lease terms and any local rules about rent are not included.

Dividing rent between roommates

Splitting rent by simply dividing by the number of people ignores the fact that rooms differ. A room-size split gives larger rooms a larger share, and a bonus for a private bathroom recognises a real difference in comfort. Some households also set aside a share of rent for common areas and split that equally, since everyone uses the kitchen and lounge. An income-based split instead aims for a similar burden relative to what each person earns. This calculator lets you compare the methods, shows every share and its cost per unit of area, and checks that the shares add up to the total rent.
