Assumptions & method
- Target = total essential monthly expenses × months of coverage.
- Gap = target − current savings (never below zero).
- Time to target: starting from current savings, each month interest (annual rate ÷ 12, compounded monthly) is applied, then your contribution is added at month end, until the balance reaches the target.
- Expenses are held constant and no inflation is applied. Results are estimates, not guarantees.
What is an emergency fund?
An emergency fund is a cash buffer for essential costs when income stops or a surprise bill arrives. Sizing it from essentials rather than total spending keeps the target realistic: if you lost your job, you would pause dining out and travel but still pay for housing, food, insurance and minimum debt payments. How many months you cover is a personal choice. A steady dual-income household may be comfortable with fewer months than a freelancer or a single-income family. This calculator lets you set that duration yourself and then shows how long your monthly contribution may take to close the gap.
