Assumptions & method
- DIY truck: rental per day × days + fuel. Professional movers: rate per person per hour × hours × crew size + fuel. Truck rental is not added when movers are chosen.
- Fuel = distance × fuel cost per km, for one direction.
- Storage = months × monthly rate. Packing supplies, travel/lodging and deposits/set-up are added as entered.
- Total = transport/labour + fuel + packing + storage + travel + deposits. Low and high = total × (1 ∓ range %).
- Home-size suggestions are rough starting points, not quotes. Insurance, tips, cleaning, taxes and special items such as pianos are included only if you add them to a field.

What goes into the cost of a move
The cost of moving depends on how much you move, how far, and who does the work. Doing it yourself replaces labour costs with truck rental and fuel, but you still pay for packing supplies and any storage. Hiring movers adds an hourly crew cost that grows with the size of the home and the time needed. Many other costs sit outside the quote, such as travel, temporary lodging, deposits and utility set-up. This estimator adds each part and shows a range around the total, because the final cost almost always differs from the plan by some amount.
