Assumptions & method
- Expense at retirement = current annual expense × share needed × (1 + inflation)^(years to retirement).
- Corpus needed = present value of withdrawals that grow with inflation each year over the retirement period, discounted at the post-retirement return. Withdrawals happen at the start of each year (annuity due).
- Projected corpus = current savings compounded annually at the pre-retirement return + monthly contributions at month end, using the monthly rate equivalent to the annual return.
- Required monthly saving is the total monthly amount that would make the projected corpus equal the corpus needed; the additional amount is the difference from your current contribution.
- Contributions are held flat, and no taxes, fees, pensions or other income are modelled. Results are estimates, not guarantees.
What is a retirement corpus?
Your retirement corpus is the pot of savings you hold on the day you stop earning, and from which you fund everything afterwards. Sizing it means answering three things: what will your spending look like by then once inflation has done its work, how many years does it need to last, and what will the money earn while you draw it down. This calculator answers each in turn and then compares the corpus you need with where your current savings and contributions are likely to take you, showing the shortfall and the monthly saving that would close it. Because longevity is uncertain, planning to a later age is a cushion, not a forecast.
