Quick answer
Savings-by-age compares your savings with a multiple of annual income, using milestones of about 1x at 30, 3x at 40, 6x at 50, 8x at 60 and 10x at 67, interpolated between ages. These are rules of thumb, not requirements.

Assumptions & method
- Milestones used: 1× income at 30, 3× at 40, 6× at 50, 8× at 60 and 10× at 67. These are common rules of thumb; other sources use different numbers.
- Between milestones the multiple is interpolated in a straight line. Before 30 the line runs from 0× at age 22; after 67 it stays at 10×.
- Benchmark amount = benchmark multiple × annual income. Your multiple = current savings ÷ annual income.
- Status: within 10% either side of the benchmark counts as roughly on track; more than 10% above is ahead; more than 10% below is behind.
- The comparison ignores pensions, other income, the retirement age you want, spending needs and investment returns. Use it as a rough guide only.

Using savings-by-age benchmarks
A popular way to check progress is to compare your savings with a multiple of your annual income at each age. Commonly quoted guides are about 1× by age 30, 3× by 40, 6× by 50, 8× by 60 and 10× by 67. They are rules of thumb, and they vary with the income you hope to replace, other income sources, retirement length and returns. This calculator interpolates between those milestones, shows your multiple against the benchmark for your age, and tells you whether you look ahead of or behind the guide.
