Coast FIRE Calculator
Find the amount that could let your existing savings grow to financial independence without new contributions.
Quick answer
Coast FI number = FI number / (1 + real return)^years to retirement, where FI number is annual spending / withdrawal rate. Once assets exceed it, they can grow to the FI number with no further contributions.

Assumptions & method
- FI number = annual spending ÷ withdrawal rate (as a fraction).
- Coast FI number = FI number ÷ (1 + real return)^(years to retirement age). It falls as retirement gets closer.
- Monthly rate = (1 + real return)^(1/12) − 1; contributions are added at the end of each month.
- Coast age is the first month where assets with contributions are at or above that age's Coast FI number.
- "Coasting" column grows today's assets with no new contributions. Spending, return and the withdrawal rate stay constant; the rate is an assumption, not a safe figure.
- Taxes, fees, income needed before retirement, and market volatility are not included.

What Coast FIRE means
Coast FIRE is the point where your investments are large enough to grow into your full financial independence number by retirement age without further contributions. First the calculator finds the FI number: annual spending divided by your chosen withdrawal rate. Then it discounts that figure back by the real return over the years left, giving the Coast FI number. If your assets are already above it, you are coasting on these assumptions. If not, it shows the age at which your monthly contributions would take you there.
