Remaining Loan Balance Calculator
Find the outstanding principal on a fixed-rate loan after a number of payments, with principal and interest paid so far.
Quick answer
The balance after k payments is B = P x (1+r)^k - PMT x ((1+r)^k - 1) / r, where P is the original loan, r the periodic rate and PMT the payment. That is the loan grown at the rate minus the future value of payments made.

Assumptions & method
- Monthly payment A = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), with r = annual rate ÷ 12 and n = years × 12. At 0% it is P ÷ n.
- Balance after k payments: B = P(1 + r)^k − A((1 + r)^k − 1) ÷ r. At 0% it is P − A × k.
- Payments are monthly, made at the end of each month, at a fixed rate for the whole term.
- Date option: payments made = whole months between the start and as-of dates, capped at the term.
- Extra payments, fees, missed payments, rate changes and accrued daily interest are not included. Figures are estimates.

How the outstanding balance is worked out
On a fixed-rate amortizing loan the payment never changes, but its make-up does. Each month interest is charged on the balance still owed, and whatever is left of the payment reduces principal. After k payments, the remaining balance equals the original loan grown at the periodic rate for k periods, minus the future value of the payments made. This calculator applies that closed-form formula, then splits what you have paid into principal and interest and shows how much of the loan is repaid.
