Assumptions & method
- Current weight = asset value ÷ total of the asset values you enter (new cash is not counted in weights before trading). Targets must add up to 100%.
- Full rebalance, sell-and-buy: each asset is moved to target % × (portfolio value + new cash). Trade = target value − current value.
- Buy-only: nothing is sold. New cash is spread so that the most underweight assets are topped up first, until the cash runs out. Assets already above their target level receive nothing.
- Threshold band: an asset is flagged if its weight differs from target by more than the band, measured in percentage points. Only flagged assets trade, and unflagged assets are left alone. Trades are sized within the flagged assets, in proportion to their targets, using their combined value plus new cash.
- If no asset is outside the band, no trades are produced and any new cash stays uninvested.
- Taxes, brokerage, bid-ask spreads and minimum lot sizes are not modelled. Selling can trigger taxes in your situation, so check the effect before you trade.
Results are estimates based on the figures you enter. They are not guarantees and not financial advice.
What is portfolio rebalancing?
Over time, assets grow at different speeds and the mix drifts away from the one you chose. Rebalancing brings it back, either by selling what has become overweight and buying what is underweight, or by directing fresh money only to the underweight assets. A calendar approach rebalances on a schedule, while a threshold approach acts only when an asset strays beyond a band, which can reduce trading. Buy-only avoids selling and any tax or cost that comes with it, but it works only if your new cash is large enough relative to the drift. Targets are a personal decision about risk and goals, and this tool only does the arithmetic of moving towards them.
