Risks and exclusions this calculator does not account for

  • Pre-existing conditions, waiting periods and policy exclusions in the small print
  • Sub-limits, co-pays and deductibles that reduce what a claim actually pays
  • Cover that ends if you leave an employer or the policy lapses
  • Future inflation in medical, education and living costs
  • Events your insurer may not cover, such as certain disasters or high-risk activities
  • Liability cover, business risks and risks to people not entered here
  • Claim rejections, disputes and settlement delays

Assumptions & method

  • You supply every figure. The tool does not know your family, health, assets or policy wording, and it does not suggest how much cover to buy.
  • Gap in a category = max(0, need − existing cover). Surplus = max(0, existing cover − need). Totals add gaps and surpluses separately.
  • Coverage ratio = Σ min(existing, need) ÷ Σ need. Surplus in one category is capped, so it does not hide a gap elsewhere. The table also shows cover ÷ need per category.
  • The "Covered" bar is green when a category is fully covered, amber from 50% and red below 50%.
  • Needs are taken as a one-time lump sum in today's money. Cover is taken at its face value, even though claims can be reduced by exclusions, waiting periods or sub-limits (see the list above).
  • Premium cost, tax treatment and employer cover that may end are not modelled. Review the excluded risks on this page before relying on any total.

Results are estimates based on the figures you enter. They are not guarantees and not financial advice.

What is an insurance coverage gap?

A coverage gap is the difference between the protection you would need if something went wrong and the protection you actually hold. Gaps are easy to miss because cover is spread across life, health, disability, critical illness and property policies, each with its own limits. This calculator lays them side by side. You list what each category should cover, enter what you already have, and see the gap or surplus line by line, plus an overall coverage ratio. The ratio caps each category at its need, so a large property cover cannot disguise a thin life policy. The assumptions and excluded risks are listed on the page so you can judge how far to trust the numbers before talking to an adviser.
