Tip Calculator
Work out the tip, the total and each person's share, with tax and rounding options.
Quick answer
A tip is the bill (or bill plus tax) x the tip percentage. Total = bill + tax + tip, and each person's share is the total divided by the number of people. Totals can be rounded up to a whole amount.

Assumptions & method
- Tax = bill × tax %. Tip = base × tip %, where the base is the pre-tax bill or the bill plus tax, as selected.
- Total = bill + tax + tip. Each share = total ÷ number of people, divided equally.
- Rounding up moves the total (or each share) to the next whole unit of currency and adds the difference to the tip.
- Effective tip % = tip ÷ pre-tax bill.
- The comparison table uses your tax, base and people settings but no rounding.
- Service charges, discounts and local tipping customs are not modelled.

How a tip is worked out
A tip is a percentage of a base amount. That base is either the bill before tax or the bill after tax, and the difference grows with the tax rate. Once the tip is added to the bill and any tax, the total can be split between several people. Many people like to round up to a whole amount so the final payment is easy, which nudges the tip higher than the percentage alone. This calculator shows the tip, the tax, the total and each person's share, plus a small table that compares common tip rates side by side so you can choose an amount that feels fair.
