Barista FIRE Calculator
Estimate the portfolio you need if part-time income covers part of your spending, and how long it could take.
Quick answer
Barista FIRE number = (annual spending - part-time income) / withdrawal rate. It is lower than the full FIRE number because part-time work covers part of spending, and savings are simulated monthly to find when it is reached.

No withdrawal rate is safe in every case.
Use a real return if spending is in today's money.

Assumptions & method
- Barista FIRE portfolio = max(0, annual spending − part-time income) ÷ withdrawal rate (as a fraction).
- Full FIRE number = annual spending ÷ withdrawal rate.
- Monthly rate = (1 + annual return)^(1/12) − 1; savings are added at the end of each month. Simulation stops at 80 years.
- Part-time income is assumed to continue for as long as you rely on it, with no change in amount.
- The withdrawal rate is your own assumption, not a guaranteed safe figure. Taxes, inflation (unless in your return), fees and volatility are not included.
Results are estimates based on the figures you enter. They are not guarantees and not financial advice.
How Barista FIRE changes the target
Full financial independence needs a portfolio that funds all of your spending. Barista FIRE lowers that bar by letting part-time or flexible work cover a share of the bill, so the portfolio only has to fund the remainder. This calculator subtracts your part-time income from annual spending, divides by your withdrawal rate to get the portfolio needed, and simulates your savings month by month to see when you get there. It then compares the timeline with the full FIRE number, so you can see what the lighter workload is really worth.
