Assumptions & method

  • Method 1: EBITDA = Net income + Interest + Taxes + Depreciation + Amortisation.
  • Method 2: EBITDA = Operating income (EBIT) + Depreciation + Amortisation.
  • Interest and taxes may be entered as negative numbers to represent net interest income or a tax credit. Depreciation and amortisation must be zero or more.
  • Adjusted EBITDA = EBITDA + adjustments. Enter one-off costs as positive add-backs and one-off gains as negative numbers.
  • EBITDA margin = EBITDA ÷ Revenue; adjusted margin = Adjusted EBITDA ÷ Revenue.
  • Results depend on the definition and adjustments chosen here. Other sources may define EBITDA differently, so compare like with like.

What is EBITDA and which definition is used here?

EBITDA strips financing and accounting choices out of profit so that businesses with different debt levels, tax positions and asset ages can be looked at on a more similar footing. This calculator uses the common definition: EBITDA = net income + interest + taxes + depreciation + amortisation, which equals operating income (EBIT) + depreciation + amortisation. You can start from either. Adjusted EBITDA goes one step further by adding back or removing one-off items you list yourself. Those adjustments are judgement calls, so each one appears as its own row. EBITDA is useful for comparing operating performance and is often used in valuation multiples, but it is not cash flow and not a substitute for net profit.
