Lean vs. Regular vs. Fat FIRE

Style Annual Spending (₹) FI Number Today (₹) Years to FI

Lean, Regular and Fat are modelled as 70%, 100% and 150% of the annual expenses entered. Savings, returns and inflation stay the same.

Assumptions & method

  • FI number = annual expenses ÷ withdrawal rate (for example 4% means 25× expenses).
  • Each year the portfolio grows by the expected return (compounded annually), then that year's savings are added at year end. Savings rise with inflation each year.
  • Expenses rise with inflation, so the FI target in year t = annual expenses × (1 + inflation)^t ÷ withdrawal rate. FI is reached in the first year the portfolio is at or above the target (searched up to 80 years).
  • No withdrawal rate is guaranteed to be sustainable. Taxes, fees, income changes and market volatility are not modelled. Results are estimates, not guarantees.

What is FIRE?

FIRE, short for Financial Independence, Retire Early, is a planning approach built on one comparison: the size of your portfolio against the cost of your life. Once the portfolio can fund your annual spending at a withdrawal rate you are comfortable with, work becomes a choice. Two levers drive the timeline, how much of your income you save and how much you spend, because spending sets both what you save and what you need. Lean, Regular and Fat variants simply describe different spending levels. This calculator inflates your expenses and savings each year so the target keeps pace with prices, and compares the three styles side by side.
