Price-to-Book Ratio Calculator

Compare a share price with book value per share, with a tangible price-to-book view that strips out intangibles.

Quick answer

Price-to-book compares a share price to the net assets behind it: P/B = share price / book value per share, where book value per share = shareholders' equity / shares outstanding. Tangible P/B removes intangibles.

Assumptions & method

  • Book value per share = shareholders' equity ÷ shares outstanding. P/B = share price ÷ book value per share.
  • Tangible book value per share = (equity − intangibles) ÷ shares. Tangible P/B = share price ÷ tangible book value per share.
  • Premium or discount to book = P/B − 1. A negative figure means the price is below book value.
  • The ratio is not meaningful when book value (or tangible book value) is zero or negative, and is then shown as a dash.
  • Book value follows accounting rules and can differ from market value of assets. Results are estimates, not advice.

How price-to-book works

Book value is what would be left for shareholders if the company's assets were recorded at their balance sheet values and every liability were paid. Dividing the share price by book value per share shows how much the market pays for each unit of that accounting equity. A value near 1 means the market prices the company close to its accounts, a higher value implies the market expects returns above the cost of equity, and a lower value can mean doubts about asset values or profitability. Tangible P/B adds a stricter view by removing goodwill and other intangibles, which matters for companies that grew by acquisition.
