Assumptions & method

  • Monthly interest = balance × APR ÷ 12, added at the start of each month, then the payment is made (monthly compounding).
  • Minimum payment each month = max(floor, % × current balance), never more than the amount owed.
  • No new purchases, fees, promotional rates or changes to the APR. Projections stop at 50 years.
  • All results are estimates, not guarantees. Your issuer’s statement is the final word.

What is a credit card payoff plan?

A payoff plan is the monthly amount you commit to repaying on a card balance so that it reaches zero by a predictable date. Card issuers usually set a minimum that shrinks with the balance, which keeps the account open for a long time. This calculator runs both strategies on the same balance and rate so you can see the difference in months and in interest. The key number to watch is the monthly interest: any payment at or below it will not reduce what you owe.
