MRR & ARR Calculator

Turn one month of subscription movements into ending MRR, net new MRR, ARR and month-over-month growth.

Quick answer

MRR is monthly recurring subscription revenue. Net new MRR = new + expansion - contraction - churned MRR, and ARR = MRR x 12. Growth rate is net new MRR divided by starting MRR.

Assumptions & method

  • Ending MRR = starting + new + expansion − contraction − churned. Net new MRR = ending − starting.
  • ARR = ending MRR × 12. It is a run rate, not recognised revenue or a forecast.
  • MoM growth = net new MRR ÷ starting MRR (undefined when starting MRR is zero).
  • Projection: MRR(t) = ending MRR × (1 + g)^t with g constant; month 0 is this month's ending MRR.
  • Not included: one-off fees, usage charges that are not contracted, discounts, refunds and currency effects.

Reading the MRR bridge

Monthly recurring revenue changes through four movements. New customers and expansion add to it, while contraction and churn take away from it. Starting from last month's MRR and adding those movements gives this month's ending MRR, and the difference is net new MRR. Dividing that by the starting figure gives month-over-month growth, and multiplying ending MRR by twelve gives ARR, an annualised run rate. Looking at the four movements separately tells you whether growth comes from winning customers or from keeping and growing the ones you already have. The optional projection shows what constant compounding at a chosen rate would produce over the next year.
