Free Cash Flow Yield Calculator

Compare free cash flow with market value to see the cash yield on equity and on enterprise value, plus FCF per share.

Quick answer

Free cash flow yield is annual free cash flow divided by market capitalisation (or by enterprise value for the EV version). It shows the cash return per unit of price paid; Price / FCF is its inverse.

Assumptions & method

  • FCF yield on equity = free cash flow ÷ market capitalisation. FCF yield on EV = free cash flow ÷ enterprise value.
  • Market capitalisation = share price × shares outstanding when you choose that input. FCF per share = FCF ÷ shares.
  • P/FCF = market capitalisation ÷ FCF, which equals 1 ÷ yield. It is shown only when FCF is positive.
  • Enter the same free cash flow measure you intend to compare: after interest with market cap, before interest with EV.
  • The table holds free cash flow constant while price moves. Future cash flow, growth and risk are not forecast.

How free cash flow yield works

Free cash flow yield expresses the cash a business generates as a percentage of what it costs to own. If a company produces 500,000 of free cash flow and its equity is valued at 10 million, the equity yield is 5%. Using enterprise value, which adds debt and subtracts cash, gives a capital-structure-neutral yield that is easier to compare across companies. The inverse of the yield is the price-to-free-cash-flow multiple. Because it is based on cash rather than accounting profit, many investors treat it as a cleaner view of value, though it depends on how stable and repeatable the cash flow is.
