How unit conversion works
Each category has a base unit — metre for length, kilogram for mass, square metre for area and litre for volume. Every other unit is stored as a factor relative to that base, so converting is a two-step process: multiply the amount by the From unit's factor to reach the base, then divide by the To unit's factor. Temperature is the exception: because Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin have different zero points, the converter applies their exact formulas rather than a single multiplier.
