Return on Assets (ROA) Calculator
Measure how much profit a business earns from its total assets, using year-end or average assets.
Quick answer
Return on assets measures profit earned per unit of assets: net income divided by total assets, using beginning, ending or average assets. An interest-adjusted version adds back after-tax interest expense.

Assumptions & method
- ROA = net income ÷ total assets.
- Average total assets = (beginning + ending) ÷ 2. With a single balance, that balance is used as given.
- Interest-adjusted ROA = (net income + interest expense × (1 − tax rate)) ÷ total assets. It appears only when interest expense is above zero.
- The tax rate is the percentage you enter; no particular tax system is assumed.
- Not included: off-balance-sheet items, one-off gains or losses, or industry comparison.
Results are estimates based on the figures you enter. They are not guarantees and not financial advice.
How return on assets works
Return on assets compares profit with everything the business owns, from cash and inventory to equipment and property. It does not care whether those assets were paid for with debt or equity, which makes it a cleaner test of operating efficiency than return on equity. A higher ROA means the company converts its asset base into profit more effectively, although the right level depends heavily on the industry. This calculator uses net income over average or year-end assets, and can also show an interest-adjusted version that adds back after-tax interest so companies with different debt loads are easier to compare.
