How percentage calculations work
A percentage is a fraction of 100, so 25% simply means 25 out of every 100, or 0.25 as a decimal. To find a percentage of a number, multiply the number by that decimal. To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. To measure change, take the difference between the new and old values, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100 — a positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease.
Percent of a number: X ÷ 100 × Y
Share of a total: X ÷ Y × 100
Change: (new − old) ÷ old × 100
