What is a budget calculator?

A budget calculator compares your monthly income with your expenses to show how much is left to save. It totals spending across categories, subtracts it from income to find what remains, and divides that by income to give your savings rate. A common rule of thumb is the 50/30/20 split — roughly 50% of after-tax income to needs, 30% to wants and 20% to savings — but that is a starting point, not financial advice. If expenses exceed income the remaining figure turns negative, which flags overspending. Review the budget regularly, especially if your income is irregular.

Remaining = Income − Expenses
Savings Rate = Remaining ÷ Income
50/30/20 is a rule of thumb
Negative remaining flags overspending
