Assumptions & method
- Gross profit = Revenue − Cost of goods sold.
- Operating profit = Gross profit − Operating expenses − Depreciation & amortisation.
- Pre-tax profit = Operating profit − Interest expense. Other income is not modelled.
- Tax = Tax rate × Pre-tax profit when pre-tax profit is positive; otherwise tax is zero (no loss carry-forward or tax credit).
- Net profit = Pre-tax profit − Tax. Net margin = Net profit ÷ Revenue.
- The tax rate is a single flat percentage you enter. No country-specific tax rules or schemes are applied.
Results are estimates based on the figures you enter. They are not guarantees and not accounting, tax or financial advice.
What is net profit?
Net profit is the last line of an income statement. It starts with revenue and removes costs in layers: the direct cost of what you sell, the running costs of the business, the wear on your assets, the cost of borrowing and finally tax. Looking at each layer separately shows where profit is lost. A healthy gross profit with a thin net profit points to heavy overheads or interest, while a low gross profit points to pricing or product cost. Because expense categories vary between businesses, this calculator lets you add your own rows and set the tax rate yourself.
