Bill Split Calculator

Split a bill evenly or by what each person ordered, with tax and tip shared fairly.

Quick answer

A bill split divides the total, including tax and tip, among diners. Tax and tip are percentages of the items subtotal, and each person pays their items x (1 + tax% + tip%), or an equal share of the total.

Assumptions & method

  • Tax = items × tax %. Tip = items × tip %. Both are applied to the pre-tax item subtotal.
  • Itemised share = person's items × (1 + tax % + tip %). Tax and tip are therefore split in proportion to items.
  • Even split = subtotal × (1 + tax % + tip %) ÷ number of people.
  • Shared dishes are not handled automatically: divide them into each person's items first.
  • Service charges, discounts and coupons are not modelled. Values are shown rounded; calculations are not.

Splitting a bill fairly

There are two common ways to split a bill. An even split divides the total by the number of people, which is fast and works when orders were similar. An itemised split starts from what each person ordered and then adds a share of the tax and tip based on the size of their order. Because tax and tip are percentages of the food and drink, sharing them in proportion is the same as applying the percentages to each person's items. This calculator handles both, shows every person's share and what portion of the bill it represents, and keeps the total matching the real bill.
