Assumptions & method

  • Net burn each month = expenses − revenue. Month n revenue = starting revenue × (1 + revenue growth)n−1, and expenses grow the same way at their own rate.
  • Cash at the end of a month = cash at the start + any funding received at the start of that month + revenue − expenses. The simulation covers up to 120 months.
  • Runway is measured to the point cash reaches zero: whole months before the shortfall month plus the fraction (cash at the start of that month ÷ that month's net burn).
  • The zero-cash date is the start date plus runway × 30.4375 days (an average month). Negative balances shown on the chart after that date are shortfalls, not available credit.
  • If revenue covers expenses in every month the runway is shown as infinite. If cash stays positive for all 120 months but some months burn cash, the runway is shown as longer than 120 months.
  • Revenue is treated as cash received in the same month, and taxes, debt service and working capital timing are not modelled separately. Include them in expenses if they matter. Growth rates are assumptions, not forecasts.

Results are estimates based on the figures you enter. They are not guarantees and not financial advice.

What is startup runway?

Runway answers a simple question: how many months until the money is gone? A single division works only if burn stays flat. Real businesses see revenue rise and costs creep up, and sometimes a funding round lands partway through. This calculator runs the cash balance forward one month at a time with your growth rates and funding event, then finds the month cash turns negative and the date it would reach zero. Use it to test scenarios, such as slower growth, higher hiring costs or a delayed raise, and to decide when to cut spending or start fundraising.
