Commute Cost Calculator

Find the daily, monthly and yearly cost of getting to work by car, transit or a mix of both.

Quick answer

Commute cost is what getting to work costs per day: round-trip fuel (2 x distance x consumption x fuel price) plus parking, tolls and transit fares, optionally plus the value of travel time. Multiply by days and weeks for the yearly cost.

Assumptions & method

  • Car cost per driving day = 2 × distance × efficiency ÷ 100 × fuel price + parking + tolls.
  • Transit cost per day = 2 × fare per one-way trip.
  • Mixed mode = share of days driven × car cost + (1 − share) × transit cost, averaged over commuting days.
  • Yearly cost = daily cost × days per week × weeks per year. Monthly cost = yearly ÷ 12.
  • Time value = round-trip hours × your hourly value, added only when the option is ticked.
  • Car depreciation, insurance, servicing and tyres are not included. See the Car Cost of Ownership Calculator.

What your commute costs

A commute is a recurring cost that is easy to underestimate because it is paid in small pieces: fuel, parking, tolls or fares. Turning it into a daily, monthly and yearly figure shows how much of your income goes on getting to work. If you drive, the fuel cost depends on the distance, your car's efficiency and the fuel price. If you use transit, it is the fare for each trip. You can also put a value on the time you spend travelling, which is useful when a longer, cheaper route competes with a quicker, costlier one. Use the result to compare options or to weigh a job's location.
