Inflation Calculator

See how inflation erodes the purchasing power of money and what a sum today may be worth in the future.

What is inflation?

Inflation is the general rise in prices over time, which steadily lowers how much each unit of money can buy. The future cost of the same goods is estimated with FV = PV × (1 + i)ⁿ, where i is the annual inflation rate and n is the number of years, while the real value of today's money is PV ÷ (1 + i)ⁿ. The nominal amount stays the same, but its purchasing power falls. This calculator uses a single assumed average rate you enter, so treat the results as an illustration of how inflation erodes value, not a forecast of actual prices.

Prices rise, purchasing power falls
Future cost = amount × (1 + i)ⁿ
Real value = amount ÷ (1 + i)ⁿ
Returns must beat inflation to grow wealth
Results are estimates, not forecasts
