Assumptions & method
- Each year: withdrawal is taken at the start of the year, then the remaining balance grows by the annual return (compounded annually).
- Withdrawal in year t = first-year withdrawal × (1 + inflation step-up)^(t − 1).
- If the balance cannot cover a full withdrawal, the remainder is withdrawn and the balance is shown as depleted in that year.
- One constant return is used, so sequence-of-returns risk is not modelled. Taxes, fees and other income are ignored.
- No withdrawal rate is guaranteed to be safe. Results are estimates, not guarantees.
What is a retirement withdrawal plan?
Once you stop earning, savings turn from something you add to into something you spend. A withdrawal plan sets how much you take out each year and how that amount changes with prices. Whether the balance lasts depends on the balance itself, the size of the withdrawals, inflation and investment returns. A common reference point is a percentage of the starting balance, but there is no percentage that works in every market or for every lifespan. This calculator shows the full path year by year so you can see where a plan is comfortable, where it is tight, and what happens when returns disappoint.
