Fixed Deposit / CD Calculator

Estimate the maturity value, interest and effective yield of a fixed deposit or certificate of deposit, with optional tax on interest.

Quick answer

A fixed deposit matures at P x (1 + r/n)^(n x t), where P is the deposit, r the annual rate, n the compounding periods per year and t the term in years. Interest is maturity minus P, and tax is a percentage of that interest.

Assumptions & method

  • Compounded: maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t), with n = 12, 4, 2 or 1 periods per year and t = years + months ÷ 12.
  • Simple interest at maturity: maturity = P × (1 + r × t).
  • Effective annual yield = (maturity ÷ P)^(1 ÷ t) − 1. For simple interest this is the equivalent yearly compounded rate.
  • Tax = tax % × total interest, taken once at the end. After-tax maturity = maturity − tax.
  • The rate is fixed and the deposit is held to maturity. Early-withdrawal penalties, fees and any tax deducted along the way are not included. Results are estimates.

How a fixed deposit grows

A fixed deposit locks a lump sum for a set term at a stated interest rate. If interest is compounded, it is added to the balance at regular intervals and then earns interest itself, so growth speeds up over time. If interest is paid only at maturity, it is calculated on the original deposit alone. The same quoted rate can therefore produce different results depending on how often it compounds. This calculator shows the maturity value, the interest earned and the effective annual yield, and lets you take off a tax percentage you enter yourself.
