Assumptions & method
- Benefits = base × benefits % (if entered as a percentage) or the fixed amount.
- Payroll costs = (base + bonus) × employer payroll %. The percentage is yours; no country rules are applied.
- Fully loaded cost = base + bonus + benefits + payroll costs + equipment & software + training + office.
- Cost per hour = fully loaded cost ÷ (productive weeks × hours per week). Multiplier = fully loaded cost ÷ base salary.
- Recruitment, onboarding, management time, severance and productivity ramp-up are not included.

Why an employee costs more than their salary
A salary is only one part of what it costs to employ someone. Employers also pay bonuses, benefits, payroll contributions and often provide equipment, software, training and a desk. Adding these up gives the fully loaded cost, which is the figure that matters for budgeting, pricing and hiring decisions. Dividing it by the hours the person actually works gives a cost per productive hour, and dividing by base salary gives a multiplier. This calculator uses percentages and amounts that you enter, with no country-specific rules, and shows where the money goes.
