What is markup?
Markup is the amount added to a product's cost to set its selling price, usually shown as a percentage of the cost. The selling price is Cost × (1 + Markup% ÷ 100), and the profit is simply Selling Price − Cost. Markup and profit margin are not the same thing: markup measures profit against cost, while margin measures the same profit against the selling price. Because the selling price is always larger, the margin percentage is always lower than the markup percentage — this calculator shows both so the difference is clear.
Markup is added on top of cost
Selling Price = Cost × (1 + Markup%)
Profit = Selling Price − Cost
Margin is always lower than markup
