Disability Income Need Calculator
Estimate the monthly income protection you may need if you cannot work, after existing cover and savings.
Quick answer
Disability income need is the larger of a target share of income, often 60% to 70%, and essential monthly expenses, less any cover you already have. It also compares savings with the waiting period before benefits start.

Assumptions & method
- Target monthly benefit = the larger of (income × replacement %) and essential monthly expenses.
- Monthly gap = target − existing monthly cover, never below zero. Gap per year = gap × 12. Total over the period = gap × 12 × years.
- Waiting period in months = days ÷ 30.4. Savings cover min(savings months, waiting months) of essential expenses; any remainder is shown as a shortfall.
- All amounts are flat: no inflation indexation, benefit offsets, partial or residual benefits are modelled.
- Tax on benefits, insurer caps, definitions of disability, exclusions and premium costs are not included. Enter income and cover on the same before-tax or after-tax basis.

How much income protection do you need?
If an illness or injury stopped you working, your income would stop but bills would not. Income protection pays part of your earnings during that time. To size it, start from a target: either a percentage of your income or your essential expenses, whichever is higher. Subtract any cover you already have, such as an employer benefit, and what remains is the monthly benefit you may need to buy. The waiting period matters too, because savings must cover the days before payments start. This calculator also totals the benefit over your chosen benefit period, to show the scale of the protection involved.
