What is compound interest?

Compound interest is interest calculated on both the original principal and the interest already added to the balance. Because every period earns interest on a growing total, the value accelerates over time — this is the "interest on interest" effect. The future value is estimated with FV = P × (1 + r/m)^(m×t), where P is the principal, r is the annual rate, m is the compounding frequency per year, and t is the number of years.
